Cost of Living in Windsor as a Graduate Student

Its my fifth year in Windsor, Ontario. This part of the world, geography does not change so frequently that you can notice. When I look back four years, I do not see much difference in the vicinity where I live than what it is now. Things change rapidly back home while time flies like a fast train here.

I believe its time to write some of my experiences about living in Windsor while studying statistics at the University of Windsor.

World Statistics Day 2010

October 20, 2010 was celebrated as the the world Statistics Day. The celebration of the World Statistics Day acknowledged the service provided by the global statistical system at national and international level, and hope to help strengthen the awareness and trust of the public in official statistics. It serves as an advocacy tool to further support the work of statisticians across different settings, cultures, and domains.

Remembering Professor Bhuiyan

I did not have Professor M R Bhuiyan as a teacher during my student life. He was a professor in the then Department of Statistics. Professor Bhuiyan is no more among us. He passed away on August 17, 2010. Innalillai Wa Inna Ilaihi Raaziun.

The news made me sad. I became nostalgic. I closed my eyes, and could only visualize a person walking alone slowly leaning towards the front, wearing a light-coloured shirt-- a man in his late 60s perhaps, with curly gray hair.

To be honest, this is not intended to be any complete tutorial. I would say, this is rather a jump-start walk-through of how to download, install, fix the patch and then run a simple model in WinBUGS. This video also shows how to run a model in WinBUGS, once you have -

written a "model" for it (all the relevant equations within model braces, the order is not important), and
have "data" (preferably in a list format, similar to R, having all the variables and parameters) and
selected "initial values" (as a list as well, containing the vector of parameters) of that model. Or you could generate them (I don't recommend).

The example is used from the example manual of WinBUGS.

I remember of one of my third year courses, Order Statistics and Non-Parametric methods. One day we were told about an assignment which was really fun attempting! When I was in 2nd year of my undergrad in Dhaka University, my elder brother got me a gift which he bought for me while coming back after finishing his course works in U.S.; The gift was a thin book and the title of the book was sort of funny - "The Little SAS Book: A Primer" written by two ladies Lora D. Using LaTeX codes on Drupal is a much talked about topic among mathematicians, statisticians and many other branches of science. DruTeX is a module that is freely available to serve this purpose. However, DruTeX needs latex to be installed on your server, which is rarely the scenario in most cases. Shared hosting providers do not allow you to install LaTeX. In this article, I've discussed my experience about the available solutions to put LaTeX equations on Drupal.

In the past five years of my study in Canada, I have received numerous emails from fellow students back home requesting for journal articles and other academic resources. When I get such requests, I try to act promptly with enthusiasm. Our students are brilliant and catches things very quickly. They can analyze things very critically. However, their condition is like a powerful machine without any fuel. I (and perhaps others living abroad) take my pleasure to provide them with a little bit of support whenever they need.

3d scatter plot using R

The other day I saw a three dimensional scatterplot in Montgomery's Regression book. I wanted to redraw the graph using the provided data. A simple google search revealed that there is a package called scatterplot3d. The scatterplot3d() can be used to draw a 3-dimensional scatter plot. Here is what the steps are:

Download and install the package from your nearest CRAN.
Load the package using the command library(scatterplot3d)

Use the attached file to run the following code in R

Statistics is all about dealing with information. And information is contained in data. In today's era of information, everything is data driven. From government to small business, even an individual makes decision based on data. Making decision without data makes no sense.

I will be giving a talk at the 2009 Canadian Mathematical Society Winter Meeting. The meeting will be held in Radisson Hotel-- on the bank of the beautiful Detroit River here in Windsor, ON, Canada. I am in the Matrix theory and Statistics session to be organized by Dr S. E. Ahmed and Dr. A Hussein of University of Windsor. My talk is scheduled on Sunday, December 6, 2009.

Graduate students in North America (Canada and the US) are an integral part of a university. Sometimes they are treated as staff as they are on payroll of the university. They share office space and part of the other facilities that a regular faculty or staff gets. Students who enroll in Masters or PhD program are known as graduate students. Almost all the universities offer graduate program in many disciplines. However, there are some universities that offer only undergraduate degrees, and no graduate degree is offered.
