Number Theory, Assistant Professor

The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Northridge invites applications or a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Number Theory to commence August 24, 2012.

Qualifications:

A PhD in  mathematics with a specialization in number theory or closely related field

Demonstrated strength in research in number theory

Commitment to both undergraduate and graduate teaching with demonstrated evidence of teaching effectiveness

Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor a diverse student population.

Responsibilities:

A successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research program, teach mathematics courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute with service to the department and university. The department strives to increase student involvement in research, and is particularly looking for candidates who can support this mission by mentoring students and obtaining external funding for their research.

Salary is commensurate with experience; startup funds and teaching reductions are available for new faculty. The university offers excellent fringe benefits.

The Department of Mathematics at University of California, Santa Barbara is seeking applications for a temporary Lecturer in Mathematics. The teaching load is three courses per term (nine courses total on a quarter system), and some teaching will include collaboration with faculty on inquiry-based learning. Candidates with a background in Inquiry Based teaching are sought. Previous post-doctoral experience is preferred, but new Ph.Ds will be also considered. The appointment is for one-year, renewable up to two additional years subject to satisfactory performance and availability of grant funds. Effective date July 1, 2012. Salary is dependent upon qualifications.

The Department of Mathematics at North Greenville University invites applications for two permanent full-time positions starting in August 2012.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An enthusiastic and evidenced Christian faith and be committed to excellence in education in a biblically sound, Christ-centered environment.
  • An earned doctorate in Mathematics or a related field. Both pure and applied math positions are available. ABDs will be considered. A minimum of 18 hours of graduate credit in mathematics is required (as per SACS). Graduate studies in a secondary area would be beneficial.

Post-Doctoral Position in Statistical Genetics

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Angelo Canty and his collaborators on derivation of methods to deal with complex datasets arising from genetic experiments including genome-wide association studies for complex pheontypes, next generation sequencing data and the analysis of gene expression miocroarray data. The work will involve real datasets as well as designing and running complex simulation studies to examine new methodology in realistic settings. It will also require communicating and working in close collaboration with biological and medical scientists. Other duties will include teaching two statistics courses per year.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in statistics, biostatistics or a related area with very strong statistical training. Excellent programming skills in R (or S-Plus) are essential as are strong written and oral communication skills in English. Prior experience with statistical analysis of genetic data would be beneficial but is not required.

The position will ideally commence on or before July 1, 2012 and provides an annual stipend of $42,000 plus a grant for research expenses. It is expected to be tenable for two years depending on research funding. Consideration of applicants will commence on February 20, 2012 and continue until the position is filled. The University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Natural Sciences, Department of Mathematics invites applications for two permanent, full-time, tenure-track positions as assistant or associate professors in applied mathematics, position numbers 82254 and 82993, to begin August 1, 2012.

Duties and Responsibilities: teach graduate and undergraduate courses; direct graduate research; establish an international reputation for excellent research; and perform related tasks as assigned.

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Mathematics from a college or university of recognized standing, or equivalent; evidence of research and/or scholarly achievement in applied mathematics; evidence of teaching excellence; poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications: in addition to the minimum qualifications for assistant professor, a minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching experience at the rank of assistant professor or associate level, or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity; scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for the rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities; continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization, or in other appropriate job-related service activities; demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate; ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.

Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications: postdoctoral research experience; ability to enhance the department's reputation for excellence in both research and the teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses.

Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications: in addition to the desirable qualifications for assistant professor, the demonstrated ability to lead a research program and generate external grant support for research.

Statistics, Assistant Professor of Statistics

The Department of Mathematics at Connecticut College invites applications for a tenure-track position in statistics to begin in the Fall of 2012 at the rank of Assistant Professor. In exceptional circumstances an appointment at a higher rank may be considered. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in statistics or a closely related field, a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, and the potential to carry on a successful research program in the setting of a small liberal arts college. In addition, candidates should be willing to participate in curriculum development, especially in the context of an interdisciplinary minor in applied statistics and a statistics concentration in the mathematics major. Collaboration with faculty and students in other disciplines on applied research projects and supervision of undergraduate students engaged in independent research are integral to this position. Announcement of Position to Begin Fall 2012

FACULTY POSITION: Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics. We are seeking a dynamic individual committed to undergraduate teaching with a strong interest in secondary mathematics education.

DUTIES: The main duty will be to teach an average of 12 credit hours of course work each semester in (primarily) mathematics as well as in mathematics education. A successful applicant will be expected to take a leadership role in the development of the Mathematics Education concentration of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program. Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified to supervise student teachers. Involvement in curriculum development, research and scholarly activity, academic advisement, and service are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair. The use of laptops and web-based technology as appropriate to enhance student learning is also expected.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. One of the following by August 2012:
    A. An earned PhD in Mathematics Education with at least 15 semester credits of graduate coursework in mathematics.
    Or
    B. An earned PhD in Mathematics with at least 15 semester credits of graduate coursework in mathematics education.
2. Demonstrated interest in K-12 mathematics education research.
3. Evidence of teaching potential and strong interest in undergraduate teaching.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
4. At least 30 semester credits of graduate coursework in mathematics.
5. Three years of mathematics teaching experience in grades 6 – 12.
6. Certifiable in mathematics teaching by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (http://dpi.wi.gov/tepdl/licensing.html).

DEPARTMENT: The Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science Department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. It has 25 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department offers all the core courses necessary for the University's program in Applied Mathematics & Computer Science program which enrolls approximately 150 students. It also provides service courses for the various programs within the University. The department is currently developing a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Department members have been active in incorporating technology into their courses. Mathematics Education, Assistant Professor in Residence

The Department of Mathematics expects to have openings for Assistant Professors in Residence beginning in Fall 2012. These are nine-month, non-tenure track positions at the Storrs campus, are annually renewable for a maximum of three years, and are open to candidates who have received a Ph.D in Mathematics or Mathematics Education within the last four years. They are particularly suitable for candidates preparing for a career as faculty at institutions with an emphasis on teaching excellence or mathematics education. In particular, the committee will be looking for specific evidence in the application of outstanding teaching. Applicants with an interest in mathematics education are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Mathematics Department has active programs in various areas of mathematical research including Mathematics Education which works on issues of K-20 education, with particular emphasis on mathematics content. This group works closely with the Center for Research in Mathematics Education based in the Neag School of Education. Successful candidates who are interested in Mathematics Education will have an opportunity to work on writing and implementing grants within these units.

The teaching load for the positions is 7 courses a year, approximately 21 credits annually. This load can be reduced through activities such as teaching large classes or coordinating multiple sections of a course.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Mathematics Education within the last four years, and a record of outstanding teaching.
